The Pay Per Click Advertising Minefield

Pay per click advertising is exactly as it sounds. You advertise online and every time someone clicks on your advert... you pay. It’s a great way to get on the front page of Google or Bing... however, it is a minefield and many people have lost $1000’s using pay per click advertising and failing miserably.

Basically, if you had a dog training product to sell you would open a Google Adwords account and advertise using the key phrase ‘dog training’ and your advert would appear down the right hand side or at the top of Google searches where the potential customer has entered a phrase including ‘dog training’. The customer clicks on your advert, you get charged 50 cents or whatever your bid was for that particular phrase and the potential customer visits your website or eBay product page and hopefully buys something.

This sounds very simple and it is... it is so simple that anyone can do it with little or no knowledge of advertising or marketing. This is exactly why Google makes so much money so easily. The problems arise when you need 100 clicks to get a sale. Do the math... $50’s to get a sale. This of course means that your product needs more than $50’s profit in the price of it after running costs etc. As you can see, pay per click advertising is a minefield. You have to get the keyword right so that it is targeted traffic. Meaning... traffic that actually wants to buy a ‘dog training’ product.

Facebook and many other social networks also offer pay per click advertising and this is more targeted as you can pick exactly which customers see your adverts but it is very expensive. You will pay twice as much per click for Facebook advertising as Google or Bing. On Facebook you won’t get much for less than a $1 per click. The internet is riddled with people losing sometimes thousands on pay per click advertising. You do have to be very careful and experiment with keywords or phrases as some will yield great returns and some will get you lots of traffic but no sales.

Pay per click advertising leverage is what you aim for, clicks that cost 20 cents and make you on average 40 cents per click. If you have a product with $40’s profit and it takes 100 clicks to get a sale (which is normal) and you have paid 20 cents per click you have made $20’s per internet sale. That’s good leverage. This is not easy to achieve... so be prepared to experiment slowly until you find the right key phrase at the right price.

If you can get the pay per click advertising leverage working you will make money very easily. However, my advice would always be to work on SEO even if you have to pay someone to do it for you as it will generate free traffic and sales which won’t eat into your profits. Search Engine Optimization will get you on the front page of Google and Bing for free. $50’s spent with a good SEO company will generate a lot more sales in the long run than any pay per click advertising will.

Now, I'm not trying to make anyone believe that Passion is the only thing necessary. Because to be successful you must also have a good website, good marketing, widespread advertising, company support, effective keywords, and etc. Those things are often learned from the company you join - but sidestep Passion and you reduce your chances for success dramatically.

It therefore follows that, if you have no Passion for the company and the products and services provided by that company, again, you won't attempt to do the work you are being taught.

Internet marketing work is typically not all that difficult or time consuming but it does take motivation caused by Passion to get you off and running with a sustained effort so that you won't stumble.

What is it with designer baby’s clothes? The more up market you go the smaller and less material they use to make babies clothes. Are wealthy people’s baby’s smaller than the working class baby’s? I doubt it! I’m sure they go to MacDonald’s just as much as the working class ones. We have to assume that the designers at Gucci etc. earn well and have tiny children. When buying baby’s clothes on eBay take the time to email the seller and get measurements if they aren’t on the listing. You will be amazed how different each brand can be in size. Especially, if the clothes are second-hand. Like our own clothes different brands react differently when washed. Some get bigger and some shrink slightly. But with children’s clothes this can be a dramatic change in size. The size of the shirts I have to buy for myself these days a little shrinkage isn’t going to matter right?... but with baby’s clothes it’s the difference in it fitting and it not. On eBay you would hopefully be getting these clothes fairly cheap, so it is a pain if you have to pursue a refund and send them back. That cheap pair of boy’s cute trousers could cost more than they are worth to send back. So you have wasted your time and money and these days you can’t afford to waste either. I grew up in a left-wing household and heard this expression every time I showed any ambition “people like us don’t have those things”. The difference in me and my siblings was that I said “why not?” That’s why I have had several businesses and my siblings have mostly worked for minimum wage or not at all. So you need to be brave and possibly a bit blinkered and say “I am going to have a go and there is no reason why I can’t achieve this”.

The easiest business to start is one doing the jobs people don’t like to do… like cleaning, ironing; clearing up garden rubbish, clearing guttering… you get the gist. There are many domestic chores that successful and busy people will pay for. You can find out what people want in your area by reading your local paper or checking out the job centre or labour exchange. If there are a lot of adverts for cleaners in your area start a cleaning business. Start on your own and then employ people further down the line. It’s better to earn £2.00 per hour from twenty people than £10.00 per hour doing it yourself. Do the maths!

Ironing, most people hate ironing, so invest in a clothes press and start an ironing round. People drop off there clean clothes and you use the press to wiz through them. Work out how long it takes to do one bag of washing and charge accordingly. Again, later if the demand is there, buy another press and employ someone to help, friends or family is best. Do some research and find out what people would be willing to pay for a bag of ironing, target wealthy areas or business people.

Obviously in this article I can’t cover everything about starting a business but I hope this has given you an insight into what you can achieve with the right mindset and a few simple ideas. Remember a successful business is just supplying a demand. Find a hungry crowd and give them what they want and you will be successful.
