Tricks to Making Money With a Blog

By Lee Mckenna

Whether you currently run a popular blog, or are just getting started, you'll clearly benefit if you can learn the best tricks to making money from it. While there are literally hundreds of different ways to monetize your site, there are a few that work better than the rest. Read this guide and implement the tips and your blogging activities will make the transition from hobby to career.

Build a Mailing List

Any internet marketer worth their salt will tell you that "the money is in the list." Those who already own a successful mailing list realize just how obvious the statement is. But for everyone else, it seems to be a mysterious concept that just doesn't add up.

A mailing list can produce profit far better than a blog for a number of reasons. First, the people on your mailing list already trust you and view you as a credible source. This means they're more likely to trust your recommendations for affiliate products, so you'll get to sell more.
In addition, you can "rent" your mailing list to other successful internet marketers. Whether you subtly promote their site and products through your list, or allow them to send an obvious advertisement is something you have to decide on your own.

There are a number of other profitable ways to use a mailing list, and you can find them rather easily by searching the web. It's a hot topic.

Don't Bother with Contextual Ads

Contextual ads, like Google's AdSense program, are a fallback for bloggers who have no other monetization strategy. While there certainly is money to be made with these types of ads, they're far from the most profitable. They also signal to your readers that you're looking to make money, and this turns some people off.

Instead, use the subtle promotion of affiliate products to generate revenue. You can easily do this by mentioning them in your blog posts with a link. Do the same in the mailing list that you've developed, and you'll increase your chances of making additional sales.

Develop Your Own Products

Unless your blog focuses on humor, there's an opportunity to create your own product that your visitors will be willing to buy. Think about the things that your readers are the most interested in, figure out how to create an information product that helps them get more of it, and then offer it for sale on your site.

For instance, if you run a blog on entrepreneurship, you can create an e-book that guides the reader, step by step, from coming up with an idea to marketing their business successfully. Be sure to present it as a solution, system, or guide, and not as an ebook. This will increase your conversions.

Review the Products You Love

No matter what type of blog you run, there are certainly products that your readers might be interested in them. If you have actually used them, write a thorough review and include affiliate links for your readers to purchase the product. Thanks to the Amazon.com affiliate program, you can sell virtually anything you can imagine as an affiliate.

The most important thing to remember when writing review posts, though, is that your readers don't want to read about how perfect it is. They want to know whether or not it will meet their needs, the downsides to purchasing that product over another, and ultimately, whether or not it's going to do what they want it to do.

By being honest and suggesting alternatives, you'll increase the chances of actually selling the product through your affiliate link. If, instead, you simply claim the product is the best thing ever created, many readers will feel it's an intentionally promotional piece designed to trick them into buying the product.

Offer Your Services as a Coach

Even if you have a new blog, you're at an advantage. You can sell your time as a coach or consultant for others hoping to get started with a blog. Pricing this service can be difficult, but with a bit of research and experimenting you'll get it right. There is absolutely no blog in the world that couldn't benefit from offering paid coaching and consulting services. Add this opportunity to your site and it will inevitably pay off.
